4th Petition of Lord’s Prayer
Catechism Reading: The Fourth Petition of the Lord’s Prayer
Give us this day our daily bread
What does this mean?
God give daily bread, even without our prayer, to all people, though sinful, but we ask in this prayer that he will help us to realize this and to receive our daily bread with thanks.
What is meant by “daily bread”?
Daily bread includes everything needed for this life, such as food and clothing, home and property, work and income, a devoted family, an orderly community, good government, favorable weather, peace and health, a good name, and true friends and neighbors.
Bible Reading: Matthew 14:19-21
19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Discussion:
What are some of the things that you are thankful that God has given you? When you pray, “Give us this day our daily bread,” you are giving thanks not just for the bread that you eat, but for everything that God has blessed you with. This week, how can you show gratitude for what God has blessed you with?
Prayer:
God, thank you for giving us not only bread to eat, but a house to live in, clothes to keep us warm, friends and family to give us companionship, and most of all your Son, Jesus. Forgive us when we fail to acknowledge the gifts we have been given and help us to receive your gifts with gratitude. Amen.
